Extinction Biologist
It's Chatty Kathy!

Don't forget the TASK QUESTIONS:

  • What are the most plausible reasons for the extinction of the honeybees on the North American Continent?
  • How will the extinction affect food crops like corn and soybeans?
  •  How will the extinction affect other living things in the ecosystem?

You have 4 sites to visit.

#1   Committe on Recently Extinct Organisms

Species extinction is difficult to figure, but is estimated at a rate of 1,000 to 10,000 times faster than would naturally occur.  The naturally occur means before humans inhabited earth.  There actually is an organization called the Committee on Recently Extinct Organisms.

·        Find out why should the average person care about species extinction?

#2    Extinction of the Rocky Mountain Locust

Extinction of species is a common occurrence, even for insect species.  One extinct insect species, the Rocky Mountain Locust, has been studied and the causes of its extinction can be found at this site.

·        Skim through site and document the causes of the extinction of the Rocky Mountain Locust.  Be sure to fully explain the causes.

#3    Human Contribution to Extinctions

#4      Other extinctions

At these two sites you will find information about several different species extinctions.  The causes of extinction of other species may help you figure out a cause of the honeybee extinction in North America.

·        Propose at least 2 realistic reasons for the North American honeybee extinction.  Support your propositions with justification.
